Haven Help to Put the Spotlight on Dorset

HEMEL HEMPSTEAD, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Aug. 8, 2012) - There's no better time to visit Dorset and, in particular, Weymouth. The roads are surprisingly quiet and it has to be one of the most stunning parts of the country. In fact the Dorset countryside has been designated an area of outstanding natural beauty. There are heaps of things to do in a week the area and a number of events and festivals besides the sailing! Here are 12 reasons to visit, but here are some dates you might want to look out for:

12 August Weymouth - cruise the Jurassic coast to Lyme Bay on the Waverley Paddle Steamer which departs from Weymouth pleasure pier.

More fireworks in Weymouth on 15 August - One of Weymouth's truly iconic summer events has to be the magnificent International Firework Displays launched in Weymouth Bay. A spectacle regularly enjoyed by thousands of residents and visitors, viewing the displays from along Weymouth.

26 August Lyme Regis Candles on the Cobb, where you're invited to watch as 5000 candles are lit on the iconic Cobb Harbour followed by a firework display. There's a torchlight procession and other events planned over the weekend.

Bournemouth Air Festival 30 August 2012-2 September 2012 - Royal Marine beach assaults, awesome jets, pilots, Royal Navy, aircraft, helicopters, Royal Air Force, fireworks and outdoor evening film screenings.

Wareham Sat 15-Sun 16 September - There are a number of events and re-enactments at Corfe Castle the English Civil War Garrison. Lord Hopton's Regiment of Foote will be demonstrating all aspects of seventeenth century encampment, including drills and weapon displays, in this popular living history weekend with a new re-enactment for 2012.

Weymouth 15-26 October - It's Shark Week at the Weymouth Sealife Centre.

There are also some fabulous places to visit in the area too if you're visiting a Haven Holiday Park:

Cerne Abbas, England's first Natural World Heritage Site. It's the largest hillfort in Europe and famous for its huge naked chalk giant!

The Saxon village of Puddletown is quintessentially English with its small thatched colourful cottages. It's one of the most attractive villages and a favourite of Thomas Hardy who was a regular visitor and where he took his inspiration from for his novel, "Far From the Madding Crowd".

Pop along to the Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre and join a guided fossil hunting walk.

Visit Lulworth Castle and walk in the footsteps of Kings and Queens. It's been owned by the same family for over 350 years dating back to the 1600, there's stacks of history to discover. Take the kids into the children's activity room and they can build their own castle or climb the Castle Tower and be rewarded with great views across the Purbecks. Oh and don't forget to take a picnic with you as there are plenty of beautiful spots to sit and enjoy it.

Durdle Door has to be one of the most photographed landmarks along the Jurassic Coast and yes the sea really is that colour! The rock arch in the sea was formed as a result of the softer rocks being eroded away behind the hard limestones, allowing the sea to punch right through them.

Weymouth beach was voted number 8 in a Trip Advisor survey earlier this year. It's a safe sandy beach with donkey rides, Punch and Judy shows, deck chair hire (knotted hanky optional). And don't leave before you've had a cream tea in one of the many cafes and tea rooms.

There are many places you could choose to stay but using Haven family holidays as a base means you can not only enjoy all the above but you can also make use of all the great facilities on their parks.
