Headlines Theatre & The UBC Faculty of Law Showcase New Theatrical Performance

"WOMEN IN LAW: An Interactive Theatre Event About Culture, Gender & Law"

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - June 11, 2008) - A correction is issued for the press release disseminated at 3:48 PM Eastern on June 11, 2008. The subtitle was omitted in the previous release.

Headlines Theatre presents a special one night only performance of "WOMEN IN LAW" at the University of British Columbia's Chan Centre for the Performing Arts on June 17, 2008. This forum theatre event explores the struggles and discrimination faced by female lawyers in a profession modeled on male culture.

The show is being presented by participants from "MASKS: The Conference on Law and Theatre" as the culmination of a six day workshop. MASKS will be hosted by the UBC Faculty of Law at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts on June 17 and 18. Facilitating this forum theatre event will be Headlines Theatre's Co-Founder and Artistic Director David Diamond.

"Anybody who values innovative theatre or has felt the affects of injustice will appreciate this event," Diamond says of the public performance."Gender discrimination in the work place isn't something only unique to law, nor is it either a 'woman's issue' or a 'men's issue' it is a 'cultural issue'. By using law as a window into these issues we explore areas with a really wide cultural relevance."

Headlines Theatre is a world-renowned Vancouver company which has been playing to consistent acclaim for twenty-seven years. The unique style of forum theatre directly engages the audience and encourages them to become participants. Through onstage interventions, both actors and audience use theatre to grapple with the dynamics of human relationships and cultivate a community dialogue.

The MASKS Conference focuses on the intersection of law and theatre studies, with an academic day examining theory and a workshop day offering hands-on experience and discussion. International guests will present on their projects in legislative theatre, Irish legal drama, and Theatre of the Oppressed. More information about the conference is available at the MASKS website www.masksjournal.com/conference.

Media are invited to attend this performance.
