Health eVillages Sets New Milestone With Funding of Its First Maternity Clinic in Lwala, Kenya

Support for Lwala Community Alliance Will Help Ensure Healthy Starts to Life for Children in Underserved Region of the Nyanzi Province in Kenya

LWALA, KENYA--(Marketwired - Jan 31, 2014) - Donato Tramuto, the Founder of Health eVillages, today announced a new initiative that will greatly expand the program's impact in the underserved region surrounding Lwala, Kenya.

Tramuto announced that Physicians Interactive, along with 35 other private donors, have raised the funds needed to build a new maternity care clinic for the Lwala Community Alliance (LCA) in Migori County, Kenya. Healthcare providers in Lwala delivered an average of 50 babies per month in 2013, and this number is constantly growing. With an increase in demand for maternity services, the LCA determined that it would need additional space.

Construction of the new maternity care clinic will begin in the first half of 2014 and will be named after the Health eVillages program. The clinic will not only offer additional beds for mothers pre- and post-delivery, but will also house a pharmacy to ensure that all appropriate medications are available for mothers when they need them.

"Health eVillages is excited to expand its relationship with LCA in Africa and support its mission to ensure every child has a healthy start to life," said Tramuto, who is also the CEO and Chairman of Physicians Interactive. "The LCA's new maternity clinic will help caregivers to continue their important work reducing the high rates of infant and maternal mortality in the Nyanza Province of Kenya. We are committed to the continuing expansion of this partnership, which is so crucial to the missions of both Health eVillages and Physicians Interactive.

Health eVillages is a program founded by Tramuto and Physicians Interactive in partnership with the not-for-profit Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice & Human Rights (RFK Center). Health eVillages also provides iPod®, iPad® and other handheld devices equipped with specialized references and clinical decision support tools to improve primary and preventive healthcare in underserved areas around the world, including the Nyanzi Province.

"We are excited to receive this latest support from Health eVillages to help build this critically needed maternity care clinic," said James Nardella, LCA's Executive Director. "Out of every 1,000 births, 95 babies in Migori County, Nyanzi Province die before their first birthday, more than ten times as many as in the U.S. Our Safe Babies program, with Health eVillages' considerable support, has been able to improve the percentage of pregnant woman in this region who are delivering babies at a health facility with a skilled nurse from 24 percent four years ago to 96 percent today. The new clinic will help us provide even better care for mothers to ensure their babies have a healthy start to life."

The LCA's community health workers recruit and enroll women of reproductive age across the Nyanzi Province through its Safe Babies program to participate in the entire continuum of maternal, neonatal and child health care. Health eVillages currently helps fund pre- and post-natal immunizations as part of the program and also provides mobile handheld devices from Physicians Interactive to the LCA's 80 community health workers as they work to improve primary and preventive healthcare across the region.
