LA FROMAGERIE BOIVIN SPREADABLE PROCESSED CHEDDAR CHEESE MAY CONTAIN DANGEROUS BACTERIA Attention: Food/Beverage Editor, Health/Medical Editor, Media Editor, News Editor OTTAWA--(CCNMatthews - July 27, 2005) - OTTAWA, July 27, 2005 - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and La Fromagerie Boivin are warning the public not to consume La Fromagerie Boivin Spreadable Processed Cheddar Cheese because the product may be contaminated with the bacteria responsible for botulism, a foodborne illness in humans.

The affected product, La Fromagerie Boivin Spreadable Processed Cheddar Cheese is sold in a 400 g package bearing UPC 6 21879 00750 3. All codes of this product is affected by the alert.

La Fromagerie Boivin, La Baie, Quebec, is voluntarily recalling the affected product from the marketplace. The affected product has been distributed in Quebec.

Botulism is a life-threatening illness caused by the build-up of toxins produced by Clostridium botulinum bacteria. Food contaminated with C. botulinum may not look or smell spoiled. The product should not be consumed by humans or animals. There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product.

The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
