Health Hazard Alert/CFIA: Certain Assorted Sandwich Products Containing Processed Cheese Sold at Co-Op, Valufoods & Ritestop Stores in the Atlantic Provinces ...

...and the Magdelan Islands, Quebec May Contain Listeria Monocytogenes

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 30, 2010) -

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Co-op Atlantic are warning the public not to consume the assorted sandwich products described below, sold in Co-op, ValuFoods and RiteStop stores in the Atlantic provinces and the Magdalen Islands, Quebec because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

This recall is being initiated as these sandwich products may contain processed cheese slices recalled by Saputo Inc., Montreal, Quebec

The following in-store packaged sandwich products (sandwiches, subs, wraps and cheeseburgers) sold in Co-op, ValuFoods and RiteStop stores in the Atlantic provinces and the Magdalen Islands, Quebec are affected by this alert:

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products.

Food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled. Consumption of food contaminated with this bacteria may cause listeriosis, a foodborne illness. Listeriosis can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea. Pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk. Infected pregnant women may experience only a mild, flu-like illness, however, infections during pregnancy can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn, or even stillbirth.

Co-op Atlantic, Moncton, New Brunswick is voluntarily recalling the affected products from the marketplace. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
