Health System; A Local Union Who Wants to Disaffiliate from the CSN

ST-CHARLES BORROMÉE, QUÉBEC--(Marketwired - July 8, 2014) - The STPSSSNL is a union of 700 members found in the CSSS from the north section of the Lanaudière area. The health and social service center has more than 27 installations. The local union represents all 40 different professions, such as social workers, psychologist, occupational therapist, physiotherapist, etc who work within the hospital setting, CLSC and long term nursing homes. Last April, the union's executive board organised meetings to vote on a proposition asking to disaffiliate formally from the CSN. The union called 19 different meetings within its territory and 565 people participated. The proposition was accepted by a total of 521 members. Thus, 76% of the membership upheld the decision to separate from the CSN.

The CSN had been advised of these meetings but refused to participate in the debates with our members concerning the process of "disaffiliation". The 28th of April, the CSN was informed of the results of the vote. The 17th of June, the CSN brought the case to the superior court as means to contest the legality of the vote. The local union maintains that the process of the disaffiliation is well within the law.

On the 10th of July, the local union of technicians and professionals from the north sector of the Lanaudière region invite their members to participate in a public protest . The goal is "to contest the anti-democratic approach of the CSN ". The event will happen between 12h15 and 12h40 in the front of the "Conseil central de Lanaudière" at 190 Montcalm street in the city of Joliette. The union representatives will be available on site to answer any question following the protest.
