HealthInfoNet Selects Clinical Architecture's Symedical(R) for Advanced Terminology Management and Data Normalization to Enhance Nationally Recognized HIE

PORTLAND, ME and CARMEL, IN--(Marketwired - Oct 21, 2014) -  HealthInfoNet, Maine's statewide health information exchange (HIE), a nationally recognized health information technology leader, has selected Symedical® from Clinical Architecture to enhance terminology management and data normalization. HealthInfoNet will utilize Symedical's unique ability to process disparate sources of information into the normalized data required to support effective exchange and manage access to mental health and HIV related information, which in the State of Maine, requires additional legal protections.

As a statewide HIE, HealthInfoNet links information from a variety of sources covering 80% of all healthcare activity in the state, to create a single electronic patient health record accessible by providers to support patient care. The HIE must match information across organizations to a normalized standard to facilitate seamless exchange, better clinical understanding and higher accuracy for reporting and analytics services. While supporting broad access to healthcare data, the HIE must also control access to certain mental health and HIV related information based on user authority to release and patient consent based on Maine State law. Symedical's ability to automate these processes and better manage data elements at the terminology level helps HealthInfoNet and its HIE participants comply with State law and protect patient privacy.

"We chose Clinical Architecture because of their ability to automate a process that used to be labor intensive for both HealthInfoNet and our customers," said Todd Rogow, Chief Technology Officer at HealthInfoNet. "The Symedical system provides automatic and real-time mapping of local codes to universal terminology standards and offers a better approach to maintain terminology standard updates within the HIE. The Symedical application has really streamlined our processes."

Symedical is a comprehensive terminology management system, which integrates with HealthInfoNet's HIE to provide a platform for a host of services including normalization, mapping and system integration. Symedical serves as a single source for all terminology management and allows for the collection and utilization of accurate and actionable clinical information.

"HealthInfoNet is a leader in health information exchange and a great partner who understands the importance of interoperability, analytics and how using information technology improves patient care and provides value to population health management," said Charlie Harp, Chief Executive Officer of Clinical Architecture. "We are excited our product has been selected to optimize the management of data within the HIE to help HealthInfoNet provide a more accurate picture of patient care across the continuum."
