March 14, 2011 14:35 ET -- Prevention Strategies on the Radio

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire - March 14, 2011) - What do Christopher Springmann, actors Morgan Freeman and Terrence Howard, plus colon and rectal surgeon Deborah Nagle all have in common?

"First," said Christopher Springmann, Executive Producer of, "March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, and we took this opportunity to face the challenge of telling the 'same old story' about colon cancer and the advantages of a preventive colonoscopy, but this time in an appealing and compelling way."

Springmann, the signature voice of the "Life Love & Health: Special Edition" radio program, and his production company, On The Path Productions LLC, acquired a classic evergreen series of Center for Disease Control PSAs on colorectal cancer prevention. These short spots, featuring the stirring voices of Freeman, Howard and actor Jimmy Smits, were used to bracket segments of an original interview with Dr. Deborah Nagle, MD, Chief of Colon and Rectal Surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School. As a spokesperson for the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS), Dr. Nagle's words carry additional weight.

"Terrence Howard leads the show with an impassioned story of his mother dying at age 56, lamenting that perhaps her premature death could have been avoided by proper colorectal cancer screening," said Springmann. "Dr. Nagle follows Mr. Howard's comments with the startling fact that, if everyone age 50 or older were screened regularly, as many as 60% of deaths from this cancer could be avoided. Also, most people are unaware that colorectal cancer is the only cancer that is currently preventable by performing a test."

This wasn't Springmann's first work with the ASCRS. In fact, when he first met Dr. Nagle and proposed collaborating on this program, he had been invited to the organization's annual meeting to receive its 2010 National Media Award for best Internet presentation. On the Path Productions' winning entry was a 90-second "Body Language" podcast called "Ulcerative Colitis," an interview with a gastroenterologist conveying the reluctance of young patients to seek treatment for a serious and sometimes embarrassing illness.

Patient advocacy, health literacy and prevention strategies are a crucial part of the commitment to patient education, physician engagement and community outreach. For example, another March "Life Love & Health: Special Edition" program features an interview with Dr. William Schaffner, chair of Vanderbilt University's Department of Preventive Medicine.

"Dr. Schaffner addresses the herpes zoster virus, which is more commonly known as shingles, and with which I unfortunately had recent personal experience," admits Springmann. "It's a residual of childhood chicken pox that can remain dormant for years, like a bear in its cave, as Dr. Schaffner put it. Well, that bear finally sensed a weakening of my adult immune system and started prowling the nerves extending out from my spine through various places on my skin. Dr. Schaffner described an adult shingles vaccine Zostavax, manufactured by Merck, and frankly, I wish I'd known about it at the time. This is the kind of information we hope will reach listeners so that they're better equipped to take charge of their own health."

"Life Love & Health: Special Edition" can be heard Fridays at 2 PM Pacific at, where it is archived online. The programs are also streamed online at and aired over the American Forces Network.
