HealthNOW Medical Center: Clinical Nutrition May Help Prevent Dangerous Drug Interactions

HealthNOW Medical Center's Destination Clinic helps patients get off drugs by discovering and addressing the root cause of their diseases and symptoms

SUNNYVALE, CALIFORNIA--(Marketwire - June 20, 2011) - According to a recent study, the majority of pharmacies fail to properly identify the potential of dangerous drug interactions. Many patients who are taking multiple drugs to control symptoms are turning to clinical nutrition for solutions that eventually enable them to reduce or eliminate their medication and prevent damage from drug interactions and reactions.

The study, conducted by the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy, tested the software systems used by 64 Arizona pharmacies. These systems are designed to alert pharmacists to possible drug interactions.

For the tests, researchers created 18 fictitious prescriptions which represented a total of 13 significant drug interactions. The software failed to identify 72% of these.

Adverse drug reactions, including drug interactions, have reached near epidemic proportions. The latest statistics from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) show that over 770,000 people are injured or die each year in hospitals from adverse drug events (ADEs), including drug interactions.

The AHRQ also says that anywhere from 28 percent to 95 percent of adverse reactions can be prevented by reducing medication errors through computerized monitoring systems. However, if the software systems used in pharmacies miss 72% of possible reactions, the problem is likely to continue.

Clinical nutrition, as practiced at HealthNOW Medical Center, a destination clinic near San Jose, California, has had unprecedented success with identifying the root cause of disease and symptoms, thereby enabling patients to reduce or eliminate their medications – and, therefore, the potential for injurious and sometimes deadly drug interactions.

"I am 37 years old and have been chronically ill, bedridden and on prescription steroids for nearly 20 years. I have suffered from disabling chronic fatigue, muscle and joint pain, chronic infections, insomnia, allergies, asthma and irritable bowel syndrome. I have sought help from physicians all over the country, including renowned rheumatologists, endocrinologists, pain specialists and a host of others. I have been prescribed hundreds of drugs, many of which have made me sicker than my original ailments. I am now nearly OFF my steroids and feel incredible. I thank God that I made the call to HealthNOW as it changed my life forever. I am experiencing a truly miraculous recovery." E.M.

"Using clinical nutrition," says Dr. Vikki Petersen, founder and clinical nutritionist at HealthNOW Medical Center, "we are able to discover and address the root cause of the diseases and symptoms experienced by the patients who come to us for help. Often, they've been going to other doctors for years, and have been given a myriad of drugs to control their symptoms. But no one had been able to diagnose and treat the root cause of their health problems. Simply attempting to control symptoms with drugs not only allows the problems to persist, and possibly get worse, it also opens the door to dangerous drug reactions and interactions – currently among one of the worst problems in the American healthcare system.

"At HealthNOW Medical Center," Dr. Petersen added, "our state of the art lab testing enables us to get to the bottom of health problems. We identify hormonal imbalances, nutritional deficiencies, bodily systems that are malfunctioning and a host of other conditions that are causing the patient's diseases and symptoms. Based on the test results, we then create a tailor-made program for each patient. As they follow their program, optimal function and health is restored and patients are often able to come off their medication. Drug side effects, interactions and the possibility of errors by pharmacists or others then become a thing of the past. We're delighted to help our patients get healthy so they don't need drugs."
