A 10-year celebration of successful healthy living programs took place in Vancouver today at the Speaking of Food and Healthy Living Awards, sponsored by Kraft Canada and Dietitians of Canada. Held in connection with the Dietitians of Canada National Conference, the Awards recognized six regional programs for their work in helping Canadians make healthier eating and activity choices. The Durham Region-based Healthy Eating in Arenas Project was selected as this year's national award recipient for its focus on creating supportive environments that help people make healthy living choices.

Healthy Eating in Arenas Project is a program designed to create environments that encourage patrons to make healthy food choices. While arenas already promote physical activity, concession stands typically sell foods high in fat, sugar and salt. The program enables patrons to make wiser food decisions by offering healthy menu options.

Adrienne Baltadjian with the Creating Healthy Environments for Youth Coalition and a spokesperson for the program, was in attendance to receive both the national and regional award titles. "We know children's food choices are influenced by the environments in which they live, learn and play," says Baltadjian. "To be honoured for this initiative helps reinforce the importance of finding innovative ways to create environments that support Canadians in their quest to live healthier lives."
