OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Dec. 1, 2006) - The Board of Review Inquiring into the Nature and Characteristics of Baby Walkers will hold public hearings, on December 4, 5, 7 and 8, 2006, under the provisions of the Hazardous Products Act, for the purpose of inquiring into the prohibition concerning the sale, advertisement and importation into Canada of baby walkers. The hearings will be held in Ottawa on the 6th floor of 90 Sparks Street. More information concerning the Board of Review, as well as a detailed schedule of the hearings, may be found at the following web address:

As the deadline for submissions closed on November 3, 2006, with the exception of the scheduled hearings, the Board is no longer accepting evidence. Accordingly, interested parties may attend and observe the hearings, but, unless already scheduled, they will not be afforded the opportunity to present information to the Board members.

At the hearing, evidence will be adduced concerning various types of accidents incurred to babies while using a walker, and parents will testify about their personal experience and tragedies involving baby walkers. The Board will also hear evidence relating to the approach followed in the United States allowing the sale of baby walkers, but under specific regulations.

During April of 2004, Canada became the first country to prohibit the distribution of baby walkers. However, subsequent to this and pursuant to the applicable legislation, the Minister of Health received a request from Elfe Juvenile Products (Montreal, Quebec) for a Board of Review to be convened.

On June 2, 2006, the Minister announced the establishment of the three-member Board consisting of the following individuals:

Jean-Claude Demers Q.C. (Chairperson) - Admitted to the Bar in 1972 and a former Assistant Deputy Minister with the Federal Department of Justice

Dr. Geoffrey Dougherty - an Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Epidemiology and Biostatistics at McGill University and Head of the Division of General Pediatrics at the Montreal Children's Hospital

Dr. Jocelyn Pedder - founder of RONA Kinetics and Associates Ltd., a company that provides expertise in the field of impact trauma and the performance of safety equipment

Upon completion of their inquiry, the Board members will submit to the Minister of Health a report containing recommendations.
