Heart and Stroke Foundation's Top Health App Is Now Even Better

Blogger Follows up 135 lb Weight Loss With < 30 Days App and Finds It Motivates to Maintain Healthy Habits and Prevent Heart Disease and Stroke

TORONTO, ON--(Marketwired - October 14, 2015) - The Heart and Stroke Foundation today unveiled a powerful tool to help Canadians get on the road to better cardiovascular health: the enhanced < 30 Days app. The < 30 Days app (less than 30) was rated one of Canada's top downloaded health apps when it was first available to the public in 2012, empowering users with both information and personalized daily challenges.

Author and speaker Ann Douglas test-drove the new < 30 Days app and found it "inspiring." For years, Douglas struggled to get healthy, but it wasn't until she discovered another Foundation digital tool, the Heart&Stroke Risk Assessment, that she finally embarked on a health journey that resulted in a loss of 135 pounds. "It has taken me five decades to figure out that this moderation thing is not a scam, it actually works," says Douglas. "Now, with the < 30 Days app, I can continue to challenge myself to keep making progress on my perennial trouble-spots: stress management and mindful eating."

"The new version of the < 30 Days app digs deep into your health history and what you need to do to achieve your goals, whether that's in the area of diet, weight, physical activity, managing stress or other risk factors like smoking and alcohol consumption. Based on this information, the enhanced app provides personalized challenges and a rewarding experience," says Ahmad Zbib, Director of Digital Health and Innovation, Heart and Stroke Foundation. "There are tens of thousands of health apps in the digital universe, but with the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Canadians can be certain they are getting credible, practical information."

Key components of the refreshed app include:

  • 4X more challenges available (now there are 600)
  • Ability to browse through challenges and to customize them
  • Improved visuals and description of risk factors
  • Goal setting to keep users motivated
  • Step counting
  • Fun trivia section
  • iOS (Apple) and Android (Google) platforms

The enhancements to the < 30 Days app have been made possible through the generous support of Desjardins Insurance and Shoppers Drug Mart. Up to 80 per cent of early heart disease and stroke can be prevented by adopting healthy behaviours including eating a healthy diet. Heart disease and stroke are leading causes of death in Canada, responsible for 27 per cent of all deaths.

The Heart and Stroke Foundation's mission is to prevent disease, save lives and promote recovery. A volunteer-based health charity, we strive to tangibly improve the health of every Canadian family, every day. Healthy lives free of heart disease and stroke. Together we will make it happen.
