Heartland Plastic and Hand Surgery to Host Free Skin Cancer Screening Event at Cape Girardeau Office

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO--(Marketwired - Apr 28, 2016) - Approximately one in six Americans will develop skin cancer during their lifetimes and the numbers are increasing at an alarming rate. To mitigate the risk, Heartland Plastic and Hand Surgery will be offering free skin cancer screenings on Friday, May 13th. May is skin cancer awareness month. The screenings will take place at their Cape Girardeau clinic, located at 319 S. Silver Springs Rd., Suite C. Dr. David Deisher and Dr. J. Stewart Humphrey, both of whom are board certified plastic surgeons, will be performing the skin cancer screenings from 8:30 am to 12 pm for the public on a walk-in basis only.

Screenings are a patient's best chance of detecting skin cancer while it is in its early stages. Skin health is extremely important to Dr. Humphrey and Dr. Deisher and how they thought this would be a great opportunity to help to keep their community healthy. That's why Heartland Plastic and Hand Surgery is offering no-cost skin cancer screenings to the residents of Cape Girardeau, Jackson, Sikeston and the surrounding community in an effort to help new patients detect skin cancer early and ensure their best possible chance of survival.

"Melanoma is almost always curable when found in its very early stages, and screenings are one of the most effective ways to detect skin cancer early," says Dr. Deisher. "Although melanoma accounts for only a small percentage of skin cancer, it causes most skin cancer deaths. The most important warning sign for skin cancer is a new spot on the skin or a spot that is changing in size, shape or color."

"It is especially important for those who are at risk of overexposure to the sun to take preventative measures, such as regular screenings, to reduce their risk of skin cancer," added Dr. Humphrey.
