Hello, Double Chin! Video Chat Sparks Plastic Surgery Interest

Online Searches for Chin Liposuction Have Spiked 22% According to Nationwide Data

SEATTLE, WA--(Marketwire - Mar 9, 2012) - The number of people who use video calling through smart phones and tablets like the iPhone® and iPad® is rapidly on the rise and forecast to hit 380 million by 2015*. And as video chat becomes increasingly more prevalent, it is purportedly causing an unexpected side effect -- double chin chagrin. Thanks to unflattering angles often cast from built in cameras when using FaceTime® and the like, previously unseen neck rolls are taking center stage and causing consumers alarm.

As a nod to this notion,, the world's largest consumer reviews and information site for plastic surgery, reveals that searches for "chin liposuction" are up a notable 22% year-over-year. Additionally, combined searches for all procedures that help chisel the chin and slim the neck have risen 14% in the last year.

Who among us might be most conscious of this unflattering "chinsation?" In analyzing geographic patterns of RealSelf's data for all chin and neck searches over the last year, the top five states posting the highest search increases were: 1) New Jersey, 2) Maine, 3) Montana, 4) Utah and 5) North Dakota.

To answer the influx of inbound patients complaining about their iPhone on-screen appearances, one doctor is even offering his own branded "face time" Facelift procedure. For the procedure -- Dr. Robert Sigal, a plastic surgeon at The Austin-Weston Center for Cosmetic Surgery in Virginia -- opts to use the technique of placing incisions behind the ears as opposed to the more common practice of mid-neck. This way, patients are left with their slimmer neckline they seek, but don't have the telltale scars seen from upward video angles.

While most people may simply brush off their newfound video chin, for those with true concerns, popular plastic surgery options include neck lifts, chin liposuction and chin implants. Based on consumer reviews at for the procedures, neck lifts are most satisfying with an 82% Worth It Rating and average cost of $7,614, with chin liposuction coming in just behind at 81% and at a cost of $2,591. For chin implants, more than half of patients at report they would do it again, and the average cost is $4,711.
