Help Give Needy Children Tools to Learn this Back-to-School Season

Staples annual "Back-to-School Supply Drive" first weekend a success

Attention: Assignment Editor, Education Editor, News Editor TORONTO, ON--(Marketwire - Aug. 11, 2008) - It's back-to-school season and some children won't be getting the supplies they need to help them succeed this fall. That's why STAPLES Business Depot is once again providing their customers across Canada with an opportunity to give the gift of education to students in need.

A recent STAPLES and Angus Reid survey of over 2,000 teachers showed that 34 per cent of Canadian students will start this school year without even the most basic school supplies. The survey also showed that teachers are spending their own money to supply their classrooms. The average teacher will spend more than $500 on school supplies for themselves and their students.

"This year's school supply drive officially launched on August 9 across Canada and in our first weekend, we have already seen tremendous support from the local communities we operate in," said Alessandra Saccal, Public Relations Manager for STAPLES Business Depot.

The STAPLES School Supply drive will run until September 7 and is in its third year. For the past three years, each STAPLES Business Depot location across the country selects a local charity, organization or school in need and ensures that they receive the donations from their local community.

Customers can purchase and drop off new school supplies into "Back-to-School Supply Drive" bins located inside all STAPLES stores. Last year, the drive collected more than $300,000 worth of school supplies.

"We are proud to say that all of our donations stay within the local community. We created a program that ensures the community will see results and benefit directly from proceeds and donations," adds Saccal.
