Hentschel of the Principal Financial Group Receives NADP Gabryl Award

Lifetime Achievement Award Recognizes Contributions to Dental Benefits Industry

DALLAS, TX--(Marketwire - Oct 5, 2012) - Developing NADP's strategic framework and providing strong, consistent leadership during the passage of the Affordable Care Act and its initial years of implementation for the National Association of Dental Plans (NADP) earned Bruce Hentschel, Assistant Vice President -- Strategy Development, Specialty Benefits Division, for the Principal Financial Group®, the prestigious 2012 Gabryl Award, the organization's highest honor.

NADP presented the Gabryl Award during CONVERGE 2012, its recent annual conference in Scottsdale, Arizona. The Gabryl Award honors lifetime volunteer achievements that help NADP fulfill its mission to promote and advance the dental benefits industry and improve consumer access to affordable, quality dental care.

Following his election to the NADP Board of Directors in 2006, Hentschel demonstrated his leadership abilities by creating a strategic framework for the association's growth. He chaired the Strategic Planning Subgroup that developed the current infrastructure and three-year cycle of the Strategic Plan.

The 2006 plan was in place for 2006-2008. He again led the redevelopment of the plan in 2008 for 2009-2011 and in 2011 for 2012-2014. His reintroduction of strategic planning for NADP is the major contribution to NADP's development and mission cited in his nomination for the Gabryl Award.

Hentschel further demonstrated his leadership abilities by serving as NADP Board Chairman during the recent economic crisis of 2008 and the debate and passage of the health care reform law in 2009 through 2010. "Bruce's leadership and vision provided a constant direction for our organization and for the dental benefits industry as we faced numerous financial and legislative uncertainties. He had his finger on the pulse of a myriad of issues. He was a constant, dependable force, whose open and transparent communication about our challenges and choices garnered the trust and admiration of our members and the other members of the Board," said NADP Executive Director Evelyn F. Ireland.

Hentschel served two full terms on the NADP Board of Directors. Prior to being elected Chairman in 2009, he served as both Secretary/Treasurer and as Vice-Chair. His Board service includes the Nomination Committee and multiple terms on the Audit Committee, Budget Committee, Compensation Committee and Investment Committee. The Strategic Plan led to the creation of the Communications Committee on which he served in 2008 and has remained active as an ex-officio member during his terms as Board Chairman and this year as immediate past Chairman.

Hentschel began his NADP volunteer service in 2004 when he joined the Education Commission and the Membership Task Force. Education tapped him that year to Chair the Annual Conference Task Force and he served as Annual Conference Chair as well. He went on to Chair the Education Commission from 2005 through 2008 and remained on the Membership Task Force in 2005 as well.

Hentschel's 25-plus years in the insurance industry began in 1984, when he joined the marketing department of the Principal Financial Group. After exposure to all facets of company operations involving risk-based insurance and protection products, in 2000 he was asked to provide leadership and direction to Principal's dental and vision product lines, focusing on market assessment, dental product development, dental managed care and dental network development. In 2001, he was appointed as President of Principal Dental Services, Employers Dental Services and Diversified Dental Services, which are wholly owned subsidiaries of the Principal Financial Group.

In 2010, Hentschel went on to lead strategy development for the Specialty Benefits Division, which includes group dental, vision, life and disability insurance, individual disability insurance and wellness programs. In this role, he focuses on developing strategic plans and evaluating opportunities to grow and expand the Principal Specialty Benefits Division.

Hentschel is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in 1982. His commitment to education continued after college with several industry education programs, receiving his designation as Fellow, Life Management Institute (FLMI), Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU), Associate, Life & Health Claims (ALHC) and Health Insurance Associate (HIA).
