Hercules Aircraft Maintenance Manuals Get an Overhaul with NGRAIN and Standard Aero Interactive Technologies

New 3D-enabled interactive technical manual helps to reduce repair turn-around time and to improve repair accuracy

ORLANDO, FLORIDA--(CCNMatthews - Dec. 5, 2006) - NGRAIN, award-winning provider of 3D performance support solutions, and Standard Aero, leading provider of maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services and technical publication solutions to the aerospace and defense industries, today unveiled plans to jointly develop a 3D-enabled Interactive Electronic Technical Manual (IETM) for the T56 Engine. The engine is used on Lockheed Martin's Hercules C130 and P3 Aircraft. The new solution will help to reduce repair turn-around time and increase equipment uptime.

Unlike traditional technical manuals, which consist mostly of text and line drawings and are delivered primarily in printed, hard copy format, the Standard Aero and NGRAIN developed IETM will leverage fully interactive 3D simulations of the T56 engine to aid maintainers in understanding and performing repair tasks. Maintainers will be able to review procedures by watching a 3D animation prior to undertaking repairs, improving the maintainers' level of understanding. Additionally, as NGRAIN uniquely provides users with the ability to interact with the 3D equipment simulations in real time, maintainers will also be able to practice repairs before undertaking them, helping improve speed and accuracy of task performance.

The new solution will also help customers to address knowledge retention and training issues for the venerable C130 and P3 aircraft and their T56 engines. The technical and training information in the IETM will help military forces, and the MRO organizations that serve them, to more effectively train junior maintainers as technicians most familiar with the engine retire. Because NGRAIN technology is optimized for Web delivery and can be deployed to PDAs, military organizations can also easily deliver this information to maintainers anywhere, anytime, regardless of geographic location.
