Heroku Extends PaaS Leadership With Cloud Service Provider Program, Development Kit

Third Party Service Providers Rapidly and Seamlessly Integrate With Heroku, Extending the Platform and Giving Customers One-Click Access to Cloud Services

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire - September 14, 2010) - Heroku, the industry's leading cloud application platform-as-a-service (PaaS) provider, today announced the introduction and immediate availability of the new Heroku Add-on Provider Program, including a complete self-service portal and development kit for independent cloud service providers. Heroku's Add-on System debuted less than a year ago and has become tremendously popular with developers: it makes it easy for them to build powerful Heroku applications by giving them one-click access to a wide range of third party cloud services. The new Provider Program is the first comprehensive offering by a Cloud PaaS provider and offers the proven processes, documentation, best practices, and APIs for cloud service providers to integrate with Heroku's cloud application platform and bring their add-ons to market.

Tens of thousands of web app developers from companies ranging from startups to some of the largest enterprises in the world are using Heroku's cloud PaaS service. Thousands of those developers are already using Heroku's Add-on System for application performance management (APM), search services, in-memory caching of data with memcached, NoSQL and SQL data stores, video transcoding technologies, and many, many others.

"A true platform is much broader than any single vendor -- building a sustainable ecosystem of technologies, services, and resources is a key part of the Heroku vision," said James Lindenbaum, co-founder of Heroku. "The energy we see around cloud services and our platform is stunning -- every day we learn about a new business building an innovative cloud service. We are excited to be able to give these businesses an easy way to plug into our platform, giving our customers a richer set of choices and capabilities."

Developed in close collaboration with add-on providers over the past nine months, the Heroku Provider Program is being actively used to create dozens of new add-ons that those providers will bring online over the coming months. Heroku expects the public availability of the Provider Program to further accelerate adoption of the Heroku platform.

Heroku Add-on Provider Program

Heroku's Add-on Provider Program is available directly from the Heroku Provider Portal at The program gives cloud service providers the complete suite of technologies, business processes, and services needed to easily build and offer Heroku Add-ons. Heroku's Provider Resource Center hosts the extensive documentation, best practices, and new add-on Development Kit. The Development Kit includes a provisioning API, manifest format, single sign-on mechanism, and testing tools for deep integration with the Heroku platform. Cloud services integrated via the Development Kit can be created using the technology and language of the provider's choice and are run and managed independently in a separate cloud infrastructure.

The Add-on Provider Program also provides a structured, proven process for bringing add-ons to the alpha, private beta, public beta, and general availability release stages, with best practices from Heroku and feedback loops from customers built in throughout the way. The business model for add-on providers is a revenue sharing agreement with Heroku, with providers responsible for the quality, support, and reliability of their service. Heroku provides the program and integration described above, including billing of customers for the services. The Add-on Catalog represents a neutral marketplace of services where the best cloud services are able to flourish.

From the customer's perspective, developer productivity is, as always, tantamount to Heroku's approach. The Add-on system provides a unified interface for installing, configuring, managing, and consuming cloud services that is tightly integrated into the Heroku customer experience. The Add-on Catalog includes detailed listings of each add-on technology, complete with multiple plans and one-click activation for Heroku customers. Heroku Add-ons can be installed and configured with a single click in the web-based UI or using a single command in the terminal, ensuring users of the Heroku cloud platform have a familiar, superior user experience.
