Heroku Fuels Social App Development With New Facebook Program

Top PaaS Provider Unveils Package and Resources for Companies to Jump-Start Facebook Initiatives

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire - November 9, 2010) -  Heroku, the industry's leading cloud application platform-as-a-service (PaaS) provider, today announced the introduction and immediate availability of a Facebook App Package and guide for building Facebook applications on Heroku's PaaS. The package is designed to make it easy for the growing number of companies -- ranging from startups to Global 2000 enterprises -- building Facebook experiences to take advantage of the productivity, openness, and robustness of the Heroku platform.

"Heroku makes building and scaling Facebook applications easier than ever. Developers can focus on their app, getting it in the hands of millions of Facebook users quickly," Mike Vernal, Director of Facebook Platform.

Heroku has proven to be tremendously popular with developers building social applications. Many thousands of social applications are running on the Heroku platform, a number of them serving millions of users and 100s of millions of requests per month. Facebook is the most popular social platform for these applications. Facebook applications are being used to reach new and prospective customers and to form tighter, more substantial relationships with customers via the web.

Customers are choosing Heroku to run their social applications because the platform enables highly productive development, frictionless deployment and scale-up and scale-down, the ability to quickly deploy new releases, and access to key architectural components -- such as NoSQL databases, asynchronous workers, and memcache -- that are often critical components of successful Facebook apps.

"The wide adoption of Heroku as the cloud app platform of choice has enabled us to identify the key ways in which customers are using PaaS to accelerate their businesses," said Byron Sebastian, CEO of Heroku. "Facebook apps are a clear category where we've seen customers large and small successfully reach millions of new potential customers and users on our platform. The Heroku Facebook initiative helps customers leverage the best practices we have identified from working with these thousands of apps."

Heroku has established resources for Facebook developers at http://heroku.com/facebook. These resources include an in-depth guide to building Facebook apps on Heroku, case studies from Clobby and Cardinal Blue detailing their successes with the Heroku platform, and access to Heroku's Facebook package. The package is designed to easily give companies the key platform resources they need to build successful Facebook applications. The components of the package -- including Heroku dynos and workers, Heroku's dedicated database service, New Relic application performance monitoring, and memcache for caching of data -- were selected based on Heroku's experience running large numbers of Facebook apps.
