HFMA Announces Awards for Best Healthcare Finance Articles

WESTCHESTER, IL--(Marketwired - July 14, 2016) - The recipients of the Best Article Award for outstanding editorial achievement in hfm magazine in fiscal year 2016 were announced by the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) in the July issue of the magazine.

The three winners are "Implementing Post-Acute Networks to Support Your Bundled Payment Program," by Sheldon Hamburger, principal consultant, The Aristone Group, Arlington, Va., published in the October 2015 hfm Early Edition (a monthly e-newsletter); "Reengineering the Healthcare Claims Management Work Flow," April Langford, CEO, Ovation Revenue Cycle Services, and vice president, finance, revenue cycle innovation, UPMC, Pittsburgh, and Frances Voelker, senior director, revenue cycle, UPMC, Pittsburgh, published in the September 2015 hfm Early Edition; and "Integrating Physical and Behavioral Health: A Major Step Toward Population Health Management," by Phyllis Floyd, MD, senior advisor, BDC Advisors, LLC, Miami, published in the January 2016 issue of hfm.

The challenges hospitals face in assuming responsibility for post-acute care costs while generally having little experience in that area are addressed in Hamburger's article, which also offers lessons that can be applied by hospitals that are just getting started with bundled payments.

In the article written by Langford and Voelker, UPMC's experience with accelerating the claims cycle is analyzed to provide strategies for focusing resources on the activities that matter most to the bottom line. The organization credits its success to automation and continuous performance improvement, as well as identifying and correcting inefficiencies to become a better partner with health plans.

Floyd's article analyzes the potential, challenges, and strategies for integrating behavioral health into population health programs, which can enhance compliance with preventive care, help engage patients in self-management, and decrease emergency department visits and inpatient admissions.

Winners of the Helen Yerger/L. Vann Seawell Best Articles award are selected by a panel of five healthcare leaders who review each article published in hfm. Articles are judged on the writer's demonstration of technical quality and writing skills, and contributions to the literature of healthcare finance.
