HHS Secretary Sebelius to Speak to Parents, Child Advocates During National PTA Legislative Conference, March 9

PTA Takes to Capitol Hill, Builds Momentum Around Child Advocacy Issues; Family Engagement in Education; Education Funding

ALEXANDRIA, VA--(Marketwire - February 8, 2011) - Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Kathleen Sebelius will address parents and child advocates on Wednesday, March 9 at a luncheon during the National PTA® Legislative Conference (March 9 - 10). The event will take place at the Doubletree Hotel Crystal City -- National Airport (300 Army Navy Drive, Arlington, VA).

Secretary Sebelius is slated to speak about how effective family engagement, beginning with Head Start and during a child's early years, lays a positive foundation for success during transitions and across a child's lifespan.

"We commend Secretary Sebelius as she continues to champion for children and families," said Charles "Chuck" J. Saylors, National PTA President. "We are honored to have the Secretary speak to parents and child advocates at our National Legislative Conference as she is a great role model through her tireless efforts in childhood health and development -- an area of public policy in which PTA has been instrumental since our inception in 1897. PTA looks forward to supporting the Secretary's efforts in family engagement in Head Start, early education, and childhood health and development."

The two-day conference is designed to motivate 'grasstop' leaders from across the country and provide an in-depth look at the latest PTA Public Policy Agenda through a series of workshops, skill building trainings, panel discussions and guest speakers.

The conference will culminate with Capitol Hill visits with congressional leaders that will focus on 2011 public policy priorities: effective family engagement in education and equity and opportunity in education for all children.
