High-Tech Leaders Focus on IP Protection Strategies at AGMA Member Conference

Combating Software Piracy, Channel Incentive Program Best Practices Discussed as Companies Look to Protect Assets; Organization Unveils New Website

LOS GATOS, CA--(Marketwire - Jun 18, 2012) - AGMA, a non-profit organization and the largest group solely focused on intellectual property (IP) protection in the high-tech industry, recently held their annual member forum. The conference, hosted by Sideman & Bancroft at their offices in Northern California, featured presentations, panel session and open forums all designed with one overriding goal in mind: sharing knowledge and best practices on how to best prevent the erosion of brand integrity.

Additionally, AGMA unveiled its newly redesigned website at the conference, which provides visitors with a user-friendly experience through simple navigation and robust content showcasing AGMA's long history and expertise in the fight to protect IP. The cornerstones of the new website are the four distinct areas of focus that, according to AGMA, must be closely guarded in order for the high-tech industry to thrive and contribute to economic prosperity, innovation and security. These are: gray marketing, counterfeiting, service and warranty abuse, and IP in the digital domain.

At AGMA's quarterly conferences, members and guests receive invaluable insights to combat, deter and prevent the global impact of infringements on their intellectual property rights. For example, Microsoft's Sally Nguyen detailed the problems presented by software piracy -- including the staggering losses it can create -- and outlined Microsoft's approach to reducing these losses. According to Nguyen, Microsoft deploys a strategy that looks at sales and source problems that contribute to piracy, and engages all employees as anti-piracy advocates by relating piracy to what's important to them -- sales and service.

Channel incentive programs must be effectively managed in order to guard against the opportunity they can create for gray market activity and other behavior that can erode profitability. Muhammad Farhan Abbassi, who heads up the data integrity team for AGMA member company Seagate Technology, shared the company's best practices for channel data collection, processing and analysis. Seagate employs a third party company to receive and 'cleanse' data coming in from distributors through POS and inventory reporting. Seagate is constantly honing its processes and using statistics to highlight problem areas, reducing risk and increasing compliance.

Jim Shore and Lou Feuchtbaum, partners at host firm Sideman & Bancroft, gave a presentation entitled, "Essential Considerations for the Intellectual Property Investigative Interview." This presentation provided a lawyer's perspective on what to consider when tasked with handling an investigative interview. Noting that planning, conducting and documenting the interview are critical steps for success, Shore and Feuchtbaum outlined the pros and cons of the elements within each step for the audience.

A representative of the FBI was also on hand to discuss intellectual property rights and computer intrusion investigations relating to gray market proliferation and hard good manufacture.
