SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA--(Marketwire - April 1, 2011) - Affordable Comfort, Inc. (ACI), the nation's leading educational resource for home performance and weatherization, presents highlights of the second day of the 25th annual National Home Performance Conference taking place at the Marriott Marquis in San Francisco, CA, March 30 to April 1, 2011.
The conference wrapped up today with more than 30 educational sessions and hands-on demonstrations. Over the course of the event, 2,000 energy auditors, contractors, remodelers, weatherization technicians, building scientists, researchers and representatives from product manufacturers, standards organizations, utilities, government agencies and energy efficiency incentive programs have joined together to participate in almost 150 educational sessions, a robust exhibit hall, industry meetings and networking events.
Just a few of the educational sessions from the final day are highlighted below.
Insulating Crawl Spaces and Basements
David Hales of Washington State University presented current research on crawl space construction and basement insulation, the impact basement design has on a home's energy use and indoor air quality, and best practices to prevent or correct problems.
Beyond 70%: Measured Results and Lessons Learned
William Turner of Turner Building Science and Linda Wigington of ACI and the Thousand Home Challenge initiative presented an examination of five moderate and cold climate homes from the challenge that achieved significant energy savings through considered performance upgrades. One home in particular achieved a 70% reduction in heating energy without making any changes to the walls. The audience also learned about health and safety considerations when conducting a deep energy remodel.
Winners of the Score This Job Competition
Energy auditors had the chance to show their skills and win prizes in this special competition. An expert panel of judges chose the best energy retrofit solution offered up for a local San Francisco area house. Contestants were taken to the contest house and given three hours to gather enough information to put together their entry, including a copy of all data taken at the home, a home energy score and two possible work scopes—one for a $8,000 range and one for a $15,000 range.
The Best Sizzle Award recognized a well-presented work plan with a reasonable list of recommended measures to implement, based on customer concerns and other issues found in the house. The winner of the Best Sizzle award went to HEAL AR with Recurve as the runner up.
The Best Steak Award recognized a work plan that addressed customer concerns and applied many if not all of the expert recommendations. Stephen Pelton EcoSmart Home Services took the top spot, with Kim Bond and Ryan Lamberg - The Energuy as runners up.
New Product Launch: EPS Auditor
Earth Advantage Institute launched EPS Auditor, a cost-effective and easy-to-use online home energy assessment tool for auditors that generates EPS Scorecards and recommendation reports in real time.
The tool, tested during extensive pilots in Seattle and Bellingham, Washington, has received highly favorable feedback because of its accuracy and simplicity. EPS Auditor enables auditors to conduct on-site energy assessments faster and provide customized, professional-looking reports and recommendations to homeowners within minutes. EPS Auditor requires fewer data inputs per site visit while using templates to accelerate the real-time generation of home energy reports and scorecards.
EPS Auditor will be the first "pay-as-you-go" web-based audit tool, eliminating the need for association membership costs, software licensing fees, and provider approval fees.
