Historic Greenbrier Resort to Sell Furniture, China, Other Items at Auction

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, WV--(Marketwire - Apr 26, 2011) - For decades, the famous Greenbrier Resort held a dark secret: Hidden beneath it was a massive fallout shelter known as the Bunker, built to protect members of Congress in the event of a nuclear attack.

But now that the Bunker has been turned into a tourist attraction, hundreds of items from it and the resort itself are being sold at auction, with Woltz & Associates managing the sales. Items being sold in the May 21 auction include antique furniture, china, commercial kitchen equipment, reclaimed building materials and even the uniforms previously worn by the resort staff.

"This will be the most fascinating auction I've ever been involved with. Everything will sell absolute, with no minimum bid or reserve, so no doubt people will get some great bargains whether they're looking for history or equipment to start a restaurant," said Jim Woltz, president of the auction company.

"The Greenbrier's history is tightly intertwined with the history of our nation, with 26 presidents having visited. So we're very proud to be conducting this auction of items and equipment that no longer fit with the resort's current needs as a casino," said Woltz. "We're selling not only antiques, but vehicles, equipment and other newer items that will appeal to a large range of buyers. For example, I wouldn't be surprised to see builders and even architects bidding on some of the reclaimed materials, such as tongue-and-groove flooring, old brass and wooden handrails and crown molding. Such materials are especially popular in high-end homes and office buildings," he said.

The auction will be held at the West Virginia Building of the State Fair Event Center in Lewisburg, W. Va. Items will be available for preview from noon to 8 p.m. Friday, May 20. Individuals seeking additional information may visit or call 800-551-3588.
