Holiday Motorists at Risk of Breakdown by Overloading Cars

LEEDS, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - July 23, 2012) - Millions of drivers are at risk of breaking down this summer by overloading their car and driving on poorly maintained roads.

Research by Asda Money car breakdown cover provider Britannia Rescue has found that 17.7 million* UK adults are planning on driving to their summer holiday destination, with nearly one in 10 (9%) are planning on overloading the car.

However, motorists are putting themselves and passenger safety at risk as 180,000 drivers have broken down as a result of overloading their car**.

Overloaded cars are more prone to breakdown because of the extra pressure placed on a vehicle's suspension. Accidents can also occur if a driver's visibility is blocked by overloading the rear windows. To make matters worse, the UK's roads are littered with potholes, which pose a serious problem for motorists with heavy cars.

As a growing number of people look set to enjoy a 'staycation' or look to drive to Europe instead of flying, they will inevitably be taking more luggage with them. Worryingly, as a result, a third (35%) of people have driven with the doors, windows, a sunroof or boot open to cram in a large load.

Driving to your holiday destination can be a luxury as it allows you to take more stuff with you, however, motorists are clearly putting their lives and others at risk as a result.

Breaking down is a high price to pay for being able to take everything and the kitchen sink with you on holiday and so it could be well worth making sure you have sufficient cover to get you out of a sticky situation.

Even if you have breakdown cover, it would be advisable to check if your policy covers you for driving across different parts of the UK and or Europe.
