Holiday Pressures Lessened for Families Hit by Cancer

Real Estate Team Runs Gift-Making Event at Hutch School

SEATTLE, WA--(Marketwire - December 20, 2007) - Children at the Hutch School, which serves cancer patients and their families, got a jump on holiday gift-giving from a team of volunteers.

On Friday, staff of ek Real Estate Group, armed with juice, cookies, and a slew of supplies, set up five craft stations to help the twenty-one children make snowmen "foamies," clothespin reindeer, painted T-shirts, decorative cards, and glittery tree ornaments for their families and friends.

The Hutch School -- the only one of its kind in the country -- serves not only cancer patients, but siblings and children of the patients as well, while patients are undergoing bone marrow transplants and other treatments at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA) and Children's Hospital. The fully accredited K-12 program is sponsored by the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, the Seattle Public Schools, and the SCCA.

The craft event helped take holiday pressures off these parents and their children, according to Micheline Hall, Hutch School program coordinator. "Families going through a crisis like this often don't have the time or the resources to prepare for the holidays. The children got to be creative and have a gift in hand to bring home.

"All children who come to the Hutch School are experiencing some degree of loss and fear," adds Hall. "We offer them a place to feel safe and protected. These volunteers have contributed more than they realize in giving our children a huge dose of holiday spirit."

Hall, whose own family has been affected by cancer, emphasizes the importance of "connectedness" for the children, especially around the holidays. "They're here in Seattle from other parts of the country or the world, they don't know a soul, and their families are in pain. When they enter our school, there's an immediate connection. It's not verbalized, it's just understood. They have something in common, someone in their family has cancer. The ek team has helped our kids connect with the holidays, with the community, and with each other."

Real estate agent Andrea Fair was amazed at "how quickly the children opened up to us about their own situations. They were excited to have us come, and I'm glad we could put some extra fun into their holidays while they're so far from home. We all get caught up with our day-to-day transactions at work, it's important to take a step back to look at what life is really about."

"Each year, ek Real Estate Group closes its doors to provide a day of service to the community. Thanks to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Seattle's cancer care is the best in the world. We wanted to acknowledge this exceptional organization, which makes a lasting contribution to many lives," according to President and CEO Edward Krigsman.
