Home Care Workers Unite With SEIU in Brampton and Mississauga

Campaign to transform home care building strength

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - April 22, 2009) - Home care workers in Brampton and Mississauga voted in favor of joining the Service Employees International Union yesterday. They are the latest workers to join SEIU in their growing campaign to raise standards and improve the quality of home care across Ontario.

"We're happy that these home care professionals have joined our effort to build a better home care system," said Sharleen Stewart, President of SEIU Local 1 Canada. "Home care isn't working for the people who provide home support or the people who rely on them. It's time to fix the system. These women and men are now part of growing movement to raise working standards and improve the quality of Ontario's home care."

In a vote held by the Ontario Labour Relations Board yesterday personal support workers employed by the Victorian Order of Nurses in Brampton and Mississauga voted 83 per cent in favor of joining SEIU Local 1 Canada.

These professionals, like other home care providers across Ontario, are frustrated by a system that makes it difficult to provide quality care to people in their homes. The provincial government's system of competitive bidding for home care contracts has left front-line home care providers working longer and harder for less pay. Many workers are left with an income that leaves them below the poverty line. The McGuinty Government promised to set basic employment standards for the sector but, three years later, little has changed.

As a result, Ontario is facing a shortage of home care workers and patients are left waiting for care to keep them healthy and independent. Instead many people have to rely on more expensive hospital care.

"I voted to join SEIU because it's time to build a home care system based on respect," said Nayantara Joku a home care worker from VON Canada. "SEIU is the healthcare union marching forward to bring better home care to the residents of Ontario. I am very excited to now be part of a union that is working very hard to fix a broken homecare system."
