Home Insurance Claims to Rise as Schools Shut for Summer

MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - July 11, 2010) - One in four UK households have made a claim as a result of school holiday mishaps according to research carried out by Swinton.

The UK's leading high street retailer of home insurance surveyed 1,200 customers and found 23% had made a claim in the past five years to repair either a broken window, piece of furniture or electrical item damaged by children during school holidays.

Playing ball games - both indoors and outdoors - was cited as the main reason for breakages, followed by over exuberant actions using a Nintendo Wii and riding bikes and skateboards indoors.

Swinton is predicting a rise in home insurance claims again this summer and warning homeowners to check exactly what is and isn't covered on their home insurance policies, as not all will cover broken windows.

Although TVs and other electrical items are usually covered as standard, sofas and carpets are not and additional accidental damage cover may need to be purchased.

Steve Chelton, Insurance Development Manager said: "While children enjoy their time off school it can be a real headache for parents who need to find ways to keep them entertained.

"Damage to carpets, electrical equipment and sofas generally top the list of claims during school holidays and are covered on most standard policies but it's still worth checking exactly what's covered on your policy."
