Home Starts Up From Last Year

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - July 9, 2010) - Housing starts during the second quarter of 2010 doubled as compared to the number a year ago in the Brantford Census Metropolitan Area (CMA)* according to preliminary figures unadjusted for seasonality released today by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). There were 155 starts in the second quarter of 2010 in the Brantford CMA.

The rise in starts was evident in all housing types during the first half of 2010, particularly in townhouse and apartment starts. There were 39 townhouses and 35 apartment starts during the quarter, all of which were started in the City of Brantford. However, growth of the new home market continued to be led by the single-detached market, which comprised nearly half of all homes started in the Brantford CMA during the quarter.

"A high level of new home starts in Brantford last quarter was driven by the relatively less expensive townhouse and apartment market," said Sarah Fong, CMHC's Senior Market Analyst for Hamilton and Brantford. "More rental apartment construction has also contributed to the higher level of starts this year.'' added Fong.
