HomeServe's Top Tips For Keeping Pesky Pests At Bay

WALSALL, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwired - June 25, 2013) - With temperatures hotting up across the UK it's that time of the year when pests start to steadily but surely attempt to invade our homes. Whether it's a few ants or wasps there are measures that you can take to prevent pests settling in your home this summer. Check out our Handy Hints for some top tips to keep your home pest free.

  1. Prevention is better than cure - Be proactive in your approach to controlling pests in your home. If you don't currently have any pest infestations that you're aware of take the time to protect your home by sealing up possible places they could try to enter your home such as small holes by your doors for example.

  2. Don't make your home inviting - Leaving your cereal on the side seems harmless but to a mouse it provides an easily accessible form of sustenance. Be sure to clear away all of the food in your kitchen. For example, ensure your cereal is stored away in lockable containers. Wash up your dishes, clean down your kitchen tops and try not to leave crumbs that might attract unwanted visitors.

If you're a fan of recycling try not to leave dirty food containers in your recycling bin. Simply give them a wash before disposing of them so that you don't attract vermin to your property.

  3. Keep creepy crawly spiders away: Put peppermint oil in cotton balls and leave them in the corners of your home where you think spiders are likely to lurk. Spiders dislike the smell and should stay away.

  4. Avoid flies in your home: Leaving exposed rubbish outside your home could easily attract flies as could dirty pet litter trays and leftover food. Leaving standing water next to doorways, inside or outdoors will also attract flies. Placing basil or lavender close to doorways or near windows should help to deter flies.

  5. Prevent wasp and spider nests: Wasps and spiders often build their nests in porch ways. A simple trick to deter them from settling in your porch is to paint the porch ceiling sky or pale blue to trick the insects into thinking it's the sky and deterring them from building nests in and around your home.
