Homeward Trust Edmonton: 30 New Units Will Support Previously Homeless in Edmonton

EDMONTON, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - March 24, 2011) - With support from the Government of Alberta, the Government of Canada (through the Homelessness Partnering Strategy), and community partners, Homeward Trust Edmonton and the Jasper Place Health and Wellness Centre gathered with the community today to support the opening of Canora Place.

Canora Place is a three-storey modular apartment complex comprising 30 self contained units. The facility includes 15 bachelor suites, 14 one bedroom suites and one two bedroom unit; five of which are barrier free. The facility will target individuals who are chronically homeless; they may also have addictions and /or mental illness, and at least 60% will have aboriginal ancestry.

"The new units will provide homeless people with a permanent home and the supports they need to address their individual issues in order to build healthier and independent lives—which strengthens both them and the community," said Jonathan Denis, Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs.

"The support of the Government of Alberta and Government of Canada is essential for new developments like this to go ahead" added Susan McGee, Executive Director of Homeward Trust. "With that support, and the participation of the partner organizations, we're confident that Canora Place will make a positive impact in the lives of its residents, and the community as a whole".

Homeward Trust contributed $1,800,000 in funds through the Government of Canada's Homelessness Partnering Strategy. The Government of Alberta contributed $4.2 million, under the Housing for the Homeless 2009/2010 Request for Proposals. Additional funds were provided by community partners.

Homeward Trust Edmonton is a not for profit organization that uses a community-based approach toward the goal of ending homelessness in Edmonton. Our primary role is to coordinate response to housing needs by working together with local agencies and all orders of government
