The Honourable Diane Finley Announces $1.6 Million Government of Canada Investment to Help Unemployed People in Haldimand and Norfolk County

SIMCOE, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Dec. 1, 2006) - The Honourable Diane Finley, Member of Parliament for Haldimand-Norfolk and Minister of Human Resources and Social Development Canada, today announced funding of more than $1.6 million for three Fanshawe College Employment Assistance Services projects to help unemployed people in Haldimand and Norfolk County.

"Canada's New Government is committed to helping unemployed workers find and keep jobs so they can attain the benefits of employment and contribute to the local economy," said Minister Finley. "These projects will provide a range of employment services for the citizens of Haldimand and Norfolk County."

Under the Employment Assistance Services Program, Fanshawe College will receive more than $1.6 million to fund three projects, including Needs Assessment Services ($576,827), Community Career Resource Centres ($555,581) and Workshops, Labour Market Information, Job Coaching and Essential Skills ($517,218).

Through these projects, Fanshawe College will provide services such as employment counselling, job search techniques and labour market information to help unemployed individuals in Haldimand and Norfolk County prepare for, find, and maintain employment. This funding, offered through Service Canada, will be delivered over the next two years.

Backgrounder

Fanshawe College Employment Assistance Services in Haldimand-Norfolk, Ontario

Fanshawe College's James N. Allan (Simcoe) Campus has served the training and educational needs of the community since 1967. The Simcoe Campus is located at 634 Ireland Road in Simcoe, Ontario. One of 23 Ontario community Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology, Fanshawe is the fifth largest college in the province, serving communities in Middlesex, Elgin, Oxford and Norfolk counties.

Norfolk County is a rural area with a population of approximately 61,000 and more than 20 hamlets and villages. The Simcoe Service Canada Centre works with five Community Career Resource Centres (located in Simcoe, Delhi, Port Dover, Waterford and Langton) to ensure employment services and labour market information are available to area residents. Fanshawe College operates all of these centres.

The Government of Canada is providing funding totalling $1,649,626 for three projects through the Employment Assistance Services program.

Over a two-year period from 2006-2008, Fanshawe College is expected to assist unemployed residents of Haldimand and Norfolk Counties with programs and services to help them find jobs.
