It's All For Charity

There are plenty of winners at HOPE Volleyball WinterFiesta but the real winners are the charities. In Ottawa, Raise-A-Reader will receive funding and ACCESO International will administer funds earmarked for the Dominican Republic.

"Literacy forms the foundation of a child's development and future. HOPE believes strongly in the power of a literate community and is thrilled that this fun initiative will once again help us to raise funds in support of literacy programs in Ottawa and the Dominican Republic" says HOPE President Linda Quarin

The Raise-a-Reader campaign aims to increase awareness and raise money for children's literacy programs in Ottawa. The premise behind Raise-a-Reader is simple: if children know how to read, it helps ensure their success as adults. The higher someone's literacy level, the more likely that person is to be employed and have a higher income. Plus, a child discovering the joy of reading is one of life's great pleasures.

ACCESO International promotes greater access to all levels of education in Latin America and the Caribbean. Working with local communities, they provide support for marginalized individuals living in underdeveloped areas so that they may study in their own country, in their own culture and in their own language. In the Dominican Republic specifically, they support university students, community libraries, a local education council, a local vocational centre, primary schools, a playground and summer camps.
