Hospitals Use Technology to Prepare for Imminent Nursing Shortage

More than 100 hospitals and health systems choose GetWellNetwork's Marbella(TM) solution to automate data collection and reporting

BETHESDA, MD--(Marketwired - November 15, 2016) - In just three short years, the United States' nursing shortage is predicted to reach a deficit of 193,000 registered nurses (source: Georgetown University). The Bureau of Labor and Statistics expects employment demand for nurses to grow much faster than the average for all occupations. To minimize the impact of the nursing shortage, an increasing number of healthcare organizations are leveraging technology to automate routine tasks, such as data collection and reporting, in order to free up nurses to focus on their patients.

Since acquiring Marbella in 2015 and integrating the data collection tool into its market-leading patient engagement platform, GetWellNetwork has implemented the system at more than 100 hospitals and health systems for rounding, real-time data collection and reporting of patient and staff feedback, among hundreds of use cases. "We bought Marbella to help with patient rounding. In addition to rounding, we now use Marbella for a variety of other quality and safety data collection initiatives," said Lorie Kelley-Norton, MSN, RN, primary nurse planner CNE Program, Great Plains Health. "After implementing Marbella we achieved our highest overall rating score since starting HCAHPS."

The University Medical Center of Princeton (UMCP) has also expanded its use of Marbella beyond leader rounding on patients. Lopa Patel, professional development specialist, GetWell system manager, said that UMCP now uses Marbella for "close to 20 different quality and safety data collection initiatives."

An increasing number of health systems are leveraging technology not just to engage patients and families in their care but to engage and retain staff. "Anywhere you have clinical staff filling out a paper and pen survey, you can automate that data collection process and save time," said Karen Drenkard, Ph.D., RN, NE-BC, FAAN, chief clinical officer and chief nurse at GetWellNetwork. "For an average-sized in-patient facility, automating just one data collection initiative can save approximately 200 hours per month on nurse leader rounding alone in aggregation, reporting and benchmarking. Nurses are then better able to spend more time on direct patient care, which is the best way to improve the patient experience and outcomes."

Since July 1, 2016, more than 20 leading hospitals and health systems have selected Marbella for data collection and decision support, including:

1. BayCare Health System, nine facilities in the Tampa, Fla. area
2. Iasis Healthcare, three facilities in Arizona
3. Kaiser Permanente, two facilities in Riverside, Calif.
4. Carroll Hospital Center, Westminster, Md.
5. Excela Health, three facilities in Pennsylvania
6. McLane Children's Scott and White, Temple, Texas
7. VA Illiana Health Care System, Danville, Ill.
8. Virginia Hospital Center, Arlington, Va.

Using any mobile device or computer, nursing staff access Marbella to securely collect, record and track data, helping providers improve quality, safety, and patient and staff satisfaction. Using the easy-to-learn, fully customizable system, CNOs, nurse managers and other executive leaders can quickly and consistently record, track and analyze staff performance and fulfillment.
