EDMONTON, ALBERTA--(Marketwired - Dec. 27, 2013) - On December 25, 2013, at approximately 8:30 p.m., an inmate at Edmonton Institution for Women took another inmate hostage. The incident was concluded at approximately midnight.
Staff acted quickly and professionally by intervening and controlling the situation.
The incident ended peacefully and no staff or inmates were physically injured. Operations at the institution will gradually return to normal.
The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) have been contacted and will be conducting their own investigation. As in all situations of this manner, the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) will work with the EPS in an effort to review the circumstances surrounding this incident. CSC will also conduct an investigation into the circumstances surrounding this incident.
