SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire - Oct 11, 2012) - In the true spirit of hospitality, The Hotel Council of San Francisco partnered with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) to raise funds for vital research. The unprecedented campaign, coined one of the City's most impressive single industry supported fund-raising initiatives, supported by Mayor Ed Lee's office, raised much needed funds to provide financial, education and social services for individuals and their families affected by blood cancer. The majority of monies raised will be earmarked to fund research on pediatric blood cancers in honor of campaign honoree, 9-year-old, Mina Olsen. The 30-day city-wide crusade, which officially closed July 31, 2012, garnered just shy of $400,000 via the tireless efforts of over 28,000 hoteliers from over 181 participating hotels.
"I commend the work of The Hotel Council of San Francisco to support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society by raising critical funds to support cancer research," said Mayor Lee. "This campaign has brought unity among our hotels and has shown that San Francisco continues to be a city with a big heart committed to making a difference."
Tom Klein, Fairmont General Manager and Regional Vice-President and San Francisco Hotel Council Board Member, led the aggressive drive, "As the 2010 Man of the Year for LLS, I took on the role of Campaign Chair knowing that if we combined forces (as the second largest employer and greatest revenue generating industry in San Francisco), 'we' could (and would) make a difference towards finding a cure for blood cancers. I want to personally thank our community partners, vendors and guests of our fine city, who supported this remarkable campaign. I am extremely proud and honored to be surrounded by so many caring, passionate and committed industry professionals. Our efforts will make a significant impact in providing much needed funds to LLS and their research programs and moving us that much closer to the cure."
"This industry-wide campaign was the first of its kind for the Greater SF Bay Area Chapter of LLS and we couldn't be prouder of the results," said LLS Executive Director, Catherine Brown. "The Million Dollar Mission united more than 70 hotels of the San Francisco Hotel Council in an extraordinary effort to raise funds to support Bay Area blood cancer patients and advance life-saving research. We are truly thankful to the more than 28,000 individuals who have ensured that we are 400,000 steps closer to a world without blood cancers."
Guest outreach, employee drives, vendor partner donations and an impressive (travel package) online auction were but a few of the many fund-raising activities.
This 2012 focused campaign served as an additional layer to the Hotel Council's long-term support of several philanthropic programs and organizations. The Hotel Council organizes philanthropic events that support scholarships for hospitality management students attending Bay Area colleges and universities. The Council also supports the work of the San Francisco Hotel/Non-Profit collaborative which transfers excess goods, supplies, food and equipment from hotels to community based non-profit organizations.
The Hotel Council of San Francisco was established in 1987 as a non-profit organization to represent all segments of the lodging industry. Our city is home to a booming tourism sector, of which the hospitality industry is a proud and vital part. We are the voice of San Francisco's hotels. The membership roster includes San Francisco's leading hotels of all sizes, in addition to more than 40 Allied Members, who are the major suppliers to these properties.
