Houghton Mifflin Harcourt's Partners for Literacy Program Provides Deep Discounts for Organizations Looking to Donate Children's Books

Partners for Literacy Provides Lower Cost Option for Corporate Social Responsibility Programs That Benefit Childhood Literacy

BOSTON, MA--(Marketwire - August 12, 2009) - Houghton Mifflin Harcourt today announced that for-profit and nonprofit organizations will continue to have the opportunity to purchase high-quality children's literature at reduced prices through its Partners for Literacy program. With a 175-year heritage of publishing excellence and promoting literacy, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt continues this tradition through Partners for Literacy, enabling participating organizations to put books in the hands of children at greatly reduced costs.

"We are proud to assist organizations in providing resources for young readers," said Josef Blumenfeld, vice president of communications at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. "Literacy is part of our longstanding tradition, and we are pleased to be able to promote children's literacy through our Partners for Literacy program, while encouraging organizations to join us in aiding this cause."

Partners for Literacy offers nonprofit organizations discounts of up to 50 percent off retail prices for any Houghton Mifflin Harcourt children's title that will be given directly to children as part of a literacy effort. With each order, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt will donate additional books relative to the quantity purchased as follows:

Quantity: Discount off suggested retail price:
     25 books 50% discount
     50 books 50% discount + 5 free books
     100 books 50% discount + 10 free books
     250 books 50% discount + 25 free books
500 books or more 50% discount + 50 free books

As further demonstration of its commitment to this cause, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt assumes all shipping charges for both the purchased and donated books.

The free books list features titles from the Curious George and Sheep Adventures series as well as several bilingual and Spanish-language titles.

The Partners for Literacy program is available to for-profit and nonprofit organizations that purchase books for children to keep. All books must be donated directly to children and may not be resold.

In the past, Partners for Literacy has worked together with a variety of organizations benefitting a vast array of literacy programs with Houghton Mifflin titles, while Harcourt titles were available via separate programs. With the reintroduction of Partners for Literacy, patrons will be able to select titles from either name through a single program.
