Housing Crisis Leads to Increase in Home Improvements Reports Swinton

MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Jan. 29, 2012) - Swinton, the UK's leading house insurance broker has reported an increase in customers seeking advice on insurance policies whilst homes go 'under the hammer'.

With the UK's current housing crisis, many home owners are finding it too expensive to move to larger homes, and are instead opting for extensions and other similar home improvements in an attempt to add value to their properties.

Any home extension or improvement can impact on home insurance policies, which makes it important for all home owners to inform their insurance provider of any work being done, as failure to do this could result in a home insurance policy becoming invalid.

Extensions often result in exterior windows or doors being secured by wooden boards during building work, which can leave a home more vulnerable to break-ins. Home owners should take extra care not to leave valuables on show to help prevent any burglars being enticed to break in.

Steve Chelton, Claims Manager at Swinton said: "Many home owners have been hit by the housing crisis. Those wanting to move simply cannot afford it so are taking steps to improve their home rather than move to a new build. In the past this would have been more difficult, but with the Government cutting red tape around extensions, this appears to be the favoured option for UK home owners. We'd urge any home owner to seek advice from their insurance provider before going ahead with an extension - this could increase home insurance and contents insurance premiums significantly."
