Housing Starts Up in Windsor

WINDSOR, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Jan. 11, 2011) - According to preliminary data released today by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), housing starts in the Windsor Census Metropolitan Area1 (CMA) totaled 617 units in 2010, up 58 per cent from the 391 units started in 2009. At 66, starts in December were higher than they had been since 2004 in the final month of the year.

"Residential construction in Windsor has picked up from last year's low and is on par with 2008's activity," said Margot Stevenson, Market Analyst for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. "A combination of a balanced resale market and an improving employment picture has resulted in stronger demand for new homes in Windsor," added Stevenson.

In December, builders started 34 single-detached houses, 12 townhomes and 20 apartment units. Over the course of 2010, builders had started 460 single-detached homes, 26 semi-detached homes, 89 townhouse units and 42 apartment units in the Windsor CMA.
