Houston Celebrates the Pop Art Movement at Red Bull Art of Can Houston

47 Innovative Works of Art on Display at the Houston Galleria July 12-25

HOUSTON, TX--(Marketwire - June 11, 2008) - More than rockets will launch in Houston this summer as the Red Bull Art of Can exhibit opens July 12-25, showcasing a wide variety of art made from recycled materials. The public exhibit curated by Wade Wilson of Wade Wilson ART will be housed at the Houston Galleria. The 47-piece collection includes a life-size bull kicking a china cabinet, a Houston Texan football helmet, a kinetic pinball machine and an aluminum portrait of Barack Obama.

Red Bull Art of Can challenges artists to construct pieces created with Red Bull cans or inspired by the energy drink. Hundreds of innovative artists from around the world -- professional and amateur -- submitted their designs for consideration. Forty-seven pieces were ultimately selected to be a part of the Houston collection. The featured artists are comprised of creative types of all ages and occupations -- from classically trained artists and fashion designers to medical professionals and high school students.

"The entries exceeded everyone's expectation -- including my own -- both in aesthetic vision and overall ingenuity," said Wade Wilson, show curator. "The works range from seemingly simple thoughts to highly complicated, multi-media visions. Each piece has its own distinctive identify thus giving the exhibit a collective stronghold that will allow its audience to see beyond the obvious and remain open to the possibilities that exist within a Red Bull can."

The 2008 Red Bull Art of Can collection guarantees not only diversity and variety, but edge and excitement. Local Houston finalists Reverend Butter and Christian Azul wowed the judges with their intricately woven, large-scale cowboy boot. The aptly titled "Big Ass Boot" was constructed over a three-month period using 220 recycled Red Bull cans.

"This exhibit is so unique and will be a huge highlight in Houston this summer. I'm so glad we were selected to be part of it, and happy just to have applied. We had a great time conceptualizing and creating this piece," Butter said.

A prominent panel of judges was commissioned to sort through the wide array of submissions to determine which pieces earned a coveted pedestal in the exhibition. Their decision was based on the overall creativity, execution and construction of each piece. The distinguished judging panel includes:

-- Catherine Anspon - Fine Arts Editor, Papercity Magazine
-- Rachel Cook - Artist / Curator / Art Writer for The Austin Chronicle
-- Carolyn Farb - Philanthropist / Art Collector
-- Wayne Gilbert - Artist / G Gallery Owner / Curator
-- Jonathon Glus - CEO of the Houston Arts Alliance
-- Apama Mackey - Mackey Gallery Owner
-- Lester Marks - Art Collector / ArtsHouston Contributor
-- Angelbert Metoyer - Artist / Founder of Imagination Studios

Judges also award special honors to the top three scoring artists including the grand prize -- an all-expenses-paid trip to Art Basel, the world's leading modern art exhibit in Switzerland. Second place will receive tickets for two to Art Basel Miami, while third place will be awarded a customized local art experience. These three special awards will be announced during the private opening on Friday, July 11. The public will also have a chance to designate a "People's Choice Award" by casting votes at the exhibit and online at
