Houston Dentist Describes Progression of Dental Care for Optimal Oral Health at Every Age

Dr. Jeffrey L. Schultz Discusses the Comprehensive Array of Dental Treatments Designed for Each Stage of Life, Which Can Optimize Oral Health and Hygiene From Childhood Through Maturity

BELLAIRE, TX--(Marketwired - Jul 23, 2015) - Each stage of life, childhood, pubescence, adulthood, and beyond, comes with unique dental requirements, reveals Bellaire and Houston dentist Jeffrey L. Schultz, DDS, FAGD. He says that in addition to general dentistry treatments that can be performed at nearly any age, these phases of life often have specific challenges and opportunities with regard to oral health and hygiene. As a result, he suggests that treatment plans should be customized to suit the singular needs of the patient based on anatomic indicators, cosmetic goals, and age range.

With respect to dentistry for children, teens, and young adults, Dr. Schultz explains that typically the emphasis will be on educating the patients on excellent oral maintenance habits, including daily brushing and flossing. In addition to preventive care, cosmetic treatments, such as Invisalign®, may be desired to enhance the appearance of the smile as well as improve the function of the teeth. He also notes that occasional restorative procedures may be necessary in the event of cavities, infections, or chipped or lost teeth due to decay or damage.

Adults and the elderly, Dr. Schultz contrasts, often require enhanced periodontal care, as gum disease can eventually lead to tooth loss. Crowns bridges, dental implants, dentures, and similar restorative procedures can be utilized to address damage and decay that develop over time. Preventive care, he states, will still be an essential part of dental treatment for adults and seniors; however, dental professionals should also address any related oral health conditions that may affect an individual's quality of life, such as TMJ disorder, sleep apnea, and snoring, issues that more commonly arise in adulthood.

Ultimately, Dr. Schultz believes that oral health should be preserved at all ages, with special attention paid to the unique demands of each phase of life. He says that one-size-fits-all dentistry may ignore the higher prevalence of certain concerns within each age range, potentially resulting in lower quality treatment for the patient. He suggests that to optimize the health, function, and beauty of every smile, dental professionals should tailor treatments to suit an individual's milestones as well as their general needs and goals.
