Houston Plastic Surgeon Describes Ideal Candidates for Breast Augmentation with a Lift

James F. Boynton, MD, FACS Highlights Several Factors That Help Determine Who May Benefit From a Mastopexy With Breast Implants

HOUSTON, TX--(Marketwired - Sep 2, 2015) - According to Dr. James F. Boynton, a board certified plastic surgeon in Houston, breast augmentation can be an excellent option for women interested in improving the shape and size of their breasts, but implants alone cannot create a significant lift. In similar fashion, he explains that a breast lift can elevate and reshape the breasts for a rejuvenated aesthetic, but the procedure by itself is not able to dramatically increase the size or volume of the breasts. For these reasons, he states that a breast augmentation combined with a lift may be necessary for individuals who wish to both enlarge and elevate their breasts for an enhanced, more youthful-looking appearance.

In addition to increasing volume while concurrently lifting the breasts, Dr. Boynton notes that other benefits of combining breast augmentation with a lift -- which is also called augmentation-mastopexy -- may include an enhanced overall breast shape, an elevated nipple-areolar complex, a reduced areolar size, and a rejuvenated breast position on the chest wall. At Boynton Plastic Surgery, he says ideal candidates generally include patients who:

  • Have volume loss and drooping in the breasts following weight change, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or another circumstance
  • Want to have their breasts both lifted and enlarged
  • Are considering breast augmentation but have a moderate to significant amount of breast drooping
  • Are considering mastopexy but desire greater overall volume than can be attained with a breast lift alone

Another factor that can determine candidacy for augmentation-mastopexy is whether or not the patient has ample time for recovery, says Dr. Boynton. He explains that the two procedures are typically performed simultaneously, which necessitates approximately a week of downtime before normal, non-strenuous activities can often be resumed. However, he continues, depending on the size of the implant desired, augmentation-mastopexy may need to be performed in two separate stages. When this is the case, he says patients will need to have time available for two different surgical dates and recovery periods.

Ultimately, when interested in breast enhancement surgery, Dr. Boynton stresses the importance of consulting with a skilled and experienced board certified plastic surgeon. By doing so, he adds, patients can help to ensure they are receiving the safest, most effective guidance and care for their specific needs and desires.
