Houston Police Federal Credit Union Supports Hurricane Preparedness Campaign

Houstonians Must Remain Vigilant and Ready Despite Prolonged Period of Relative Calm

HOUSTON, TX--(Marketwired - Jul 27, 2016) -  As weather and emergency preparedness experts urge Houston area residents to be prepared for the final months of hurricane season, Houston Police Federal Credit Union (https://hpfcu.org) is proudly supporting the educational campaign, "Turn Around, Don't Drown." Houston Police Federal Credit Union, a non-profit organization that manages the financial resources of active and retired Houston Police Officers, Houston Police Department Civilian Employees and their families, partnered with the Houston Police Department, Houston Fire Department and the City of Houston Office of Emergency Management, among others.

According to data compiled by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration going back to 1851, no hurricane reaching Category 3 or higher has made landfall in the continental United States for a record-breaking 129 months. This has raised concerns about potential complacency, making educational campaigns such as Turn Around, Don't Drown more important.

Launched in June, the Turn Around, Don't Drown educational campaign has featured a series of informational workshops, brochures and promotional "safety" giveaways. Houston Police Federal Credit Union sponsored the purchase of 500 steel-tipped car escape tools designed to help people get out of disabled vehicles.

"Houston Police Federal Credit Union is proud to support Houston Police Department, Houston Fire Department and the City of Houston Office of Emergency Management in this important educational campaign, and we are thrilled that all the car escape tools have been distributed," said Ayn Talley, President with Houston Police Federal Credit Union. "Water can rise very fast in some areas of Houston, and motorists can quickly find themselves trapped. We encourage everyone to have a plan."

The 2016 hurricane season officially opened on June 1st and ends on November 30th. While all has been quiet so far, it is important to remain vigilant. Some of the Gulf Coast's notable storms of the past 20 years, including Hurricane Katrina (2005) and Hurricane Ike (2008) made landfall in early September.

In addition to personal safety, family finances should be part of hurricane preparedness. Below are some helpful tips to make sure you are ready:

  • Start an emergency savings account. Most experts recommend having a minimum of three to six months of living expenses in an emergency fund.
  • Review insurance coverage to ensure sufficient coverage to repair or replace your home and belongings.
  • Secure critical documents in a safe, secure and dry place, and have them ready to take with you if you have to evacuate.

Houston Police Federal Credit Union can help you prepare for emergency with a Share Account, which is a savings account that offers dividends compounded daily and paid monthly, and no penalty for withdrawal. Houston Police Federal Credit Union's one-time membership fee is $0.25 and a minimum deposit can be as little as $5.
