Houston's Bay Area Gastroenterology Consultants Announce Endoscopy Center Earns the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) Seal of Approval

The Gastroenterology Specialists Are Pleased That Affiliated Bay Area Houston Endoscopy Center Recognized for Commitment to Patient Safety and Quality in Endoscopy

HOUSTON, TX--(Marketwire - Feb 28, 2013) - The Bay Area Gastroenterology consultants' affiliated endoscopy center, Bay Area Houston Endoscopy Center, receives the honored Seal of Approval from The American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE), an honor bestowed to only a certain number of endoscopy units each year.

The gastroenterology group and its affiliated endoscopy center were among the first in the greater Houston area to offer virtual colonoscopy and today launches initiatives in education on colorectal cancer screening and prevention.

The ASGE Seal of Approval is awarded in honor of endoscopy units that have demonstrated a commitment to patient safety and quality in endoscopy, as evidenced by meeting the program's rigorous criteria -- including following the ASGE guidelines on privileging, quality assurance, endoscope reprocessing, CDC infection control guidelines and ensuring endoscopy staff competency.

According to Jonathan Cohen, MD, FASGE, chair ASGE Quality Assurance in Endoscopy Committee, the ASGE Seal of Approval is proudly awarded only to those units committed to promoting the highest standards of safety and quality.

"We are pleased that our affiliate endoscopy center has received this recognition from ASGE, confirming its commitment to patients and the pursuit of reducing the number of colorectal cancer deaths in today's society," said Dr. Ravi Mani, Bay Area Gastroenterology consultant.

"A preventable disease, Colon cancer remains the second most common cancer in the United States. We work diligently to educate the public and improve the screening process for our patients," added Dr. Mani.

The gastroenterology consultants are part of Bay Area Gastroenterology in Clear Lake, which was the first Houston gastroenterology and endoscopy practice to offer office-based accredited Virtual colonoscopy screening. They specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of ailments of the stomach, intestines, colon, liver, gallbladder and pancreas.

To be recognized by ASGE, a unit through a peer-reviewed application process, must attest to the continued competence of all staff relative to their roles, demonstrate the adoption of unit policies specific to ongoing assessment of performance relative to key quality indicators, and attest that the unit has an established infrastructure and personnel dedicated to infection control and prevention.
