LEEDS, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Jan. 23, 2013) - Whilst you cannot pinpoint the exact age you can expect to live to, as a nation we are living longer. Asda Money comments on life expectancy rates for men and women.
Modern healthcare benefits and higher standards of living across the country are having a positive influence on the nation's longevity. As healthcare has become more widely accessible and the latest technological advances help to do away with and cure previously common diseases, most Brits alive today can expect to live longer than generations that have come before us.
Average life expectancy rates in the UK alone have increased by four months for men and women. Men can now expect to live up to 78.2 years and women, who typically live longer than men, now live to an average of 82.3 years.*
Considerable progress has been made in the area of treating common illnesses such as cancer. Research highlights that cancer survival rates have risen significantly since the early 1970s.** The rates vary between each different type of cancer, however the research shows that if someone was diagnosed with colon cancer today, they would typically live for a decade longer than if they were diagnosed in the 1970s, where they would have a life expectancy of just seven months.
Regardless of how long people can expect to live for, few of us know what the future may hold. To prepare financially for the unexpected future, it may be worth considering taking out life insurance.
Research has shown that by eating healthier foods and exercising more can ensure that you remain fit and healthy. For example, a number of leading nutritionists and experts*** recommend eating five pieces of fruit or vegetables a day. When it comes to exercise, swimming is a good way to keep fit, particularly as it is an activity that can be done at any age.
