HP Helps Brant Community Healthcare System Revive IT Infrastructure

MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Nov. 18, 2013) - HP (NYSE:HPQ) today announced that Brant Community Healthcare System (BCHS) has improved performance and reliability by deploying an HP Converged Infrastructure to speed the delivery of medical applications to enhance patient care.

BCHS is an award-winning community healthcare system with 265 beds and 2,300 staff, physicians and volunteers. BCHS needed to modernize its aging infrastructure to reduce downtime and support critical medical applications. It also wanted to increase the use of electronic health records (EHR) across its organization to improve patient care by speeding the delivery of medical information. This required a reliable, scalable infrastructure to ensure high availability of its MEDITECH application and record management system. BCHS also needed to expand virtualization technologies in its IT environment to simplify management, and accelerate the provisioning of new services.

After evaluating competing offerings, BCHS chose an HP Converged Infrastructure including the HP BladeSystem c7000 enclosure with HP ProLiant BL460c G7 server blades for optimized performance and energy efficiency, HP Storage for increased availability, and HP Virtual Connect technology for simplified network management.

"To provide the best possible patient care, we needed a solution that delivered fast, reliable access to medical systems and information without downtime or delays," said Tim Armstrong, chief information officer and value stream leader, Knowledge and Information, Brant Community Healthcare System. "With our HP Converged Infrastructure, we now have the uptime and performance required to ensure high availability of our critical medical applications. In addition, HP provided vital consulting services and expertise to help us transition from a mainly physical infrastructure to a highly virtualized one, giving us the redundancy and visibility needed to prevent failures, and the flexibility to quickly deploy new services."

Deploying an HP Converged Infrastructure has enabled BCHS to:

• Increase system uptime by 4 percent to more than 99 percent,(1) delivering the high availability needed to support wider adoption of EHR across its organization. In addition, the Microsoft® SQL query used to schedule the operating room can now be performed in minutes instead of hours.(1)

• Reduce backup time from 24 hours to 45 minutes,(1) enabling BCHS to complete backups four times per day, compared to once per day with its previous infrastructure.

• Decrease its physical footprint in the data centre by reducing server racks from seven to three with HP ProLiant server blades. This reduces BCHS' power and cooling requirements, lowering operating costs and energy consumption.(1)

• Deploy new virtual machine (VM) servers in hours instead of days,(1) increasing scalability and speeding the provisioning of new services.

Throughout the BCHS transition to an HP Converged Infrastructure, HP Technology Consulting Services provided expertise for infrastructure design, deployment and integration. Using experience and proven methodologies, HP Technology Consulting Services also developed and implemented a migration plan to minimize risk, and ensure systems were online as scheduled to prevent disruption to patient care.

HP's premier EMEA client event, HP Discover, takes place Dec. 10-12 in Barcelona, Spain.
