HRSDC: Canada's New Government Invests Over $350,000 to Help Unemployed Individuals in Norfolk County

SIMCOE, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Oct. 21, 2006) - The Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Social Development, today announced Self-Employment Benefit program funding of $358,522 to the Norfolk District Business Development Corporation in Norfolk.

"Canada's New Government is proud to support community organizations that help people find jobs or start their own business," said Minister Finley. "I am especially pleased that this project will promote small business development and give people the assistance they need to find jobs right here at home."

Under the Self-Employment Benefit program, the Norfolk District Business Development Corporation (NDBDC) will be able to provide information sessions on self-employment, coaching/mentoring, group workshops and support to 80 participants. The goal is to help individuals progress from business concept to business start up. The NDBDC has assisted over 500 entrepreneurs since 1989.

The Self-Employment Benefit provides EI-eligible participants with income support, planning assistance and mentoring while they get their businesses up and running. Financial support, in the form of EI Income Benefits, is provided for a maximum of 52 weeks.

The Self-Employment Benefit is part of the Employment Benefits and Support Measures within Human Resources and Social Development and help Canadians to prepare for, find and keep work. These programs are delivered by Service Canada.
