HRSDC: Deputy Commissioner Appointed to the Canada Pension Plan/Old Age Security Review Tribunals

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Nov. 15, 2006) - The Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Social Development, announced today the full-time appointment of Richard G. M. Makuch as Deputy Commissioner of the Canada Pension Plan (CPP)/Old Age Security (OAS) Review Tribunals. The appointment is for a five-year term.

"I am pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Makuch. The Tribunals will benefit from his knowledge and outstanding experience," said Minister Finley.

Currently a tribunal member with the Ontario Municipal Board, Mr. Makuch has worked as Vice Chair of the Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Appeal Tribunal. He has also served as Senior Legal Counsel for various federal departments and agencies. Mr. Makuch was instrumental in negotiating agreements with the private sector and Canada's First Nations for the delivery of services. During his five years with the City of Gloucester, he managed the city's legal services department and represented the city before a number of provincial tribunals.

Mr. Makuch holds a Bachelor of Law degree from the University of Ottawa. He was called to the Bar in 1981. He also holds memberships with the Canadian Bar Association, the National Association of Administrative Law Judges, the Society of Ontario Adjudicators and Regulators and the Council of Canadian Administrative Tribunals.

The Review Tribunals are independent and impartial bodies that conduct quasi-judicial hearings of appeals for individuals whose applications for Old Age Security and Canada Pension Plan benefits were denied at the reconsideration stage of appeal.
