HRSDC: Minister Blackburn Welcomes Tentative Canadian Pacific and Teamsters Canada Rail Conference Agreement

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 4, 2007) - The Honourable Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister of Labour and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, welcomed news of a tentative agreement in the labour dispute between Canadian Pacific (CP) and Teamsters Canada Rail Conference Running Trades Employees (TCRC-RTE).

"I appreciate the effort that both parties put into achieving this tentative agreement," said Minister Blackburn. "I also congratulate CP and TCRC-RTE for their commitment to finding a negotiated solution to their differences," added the Minister.

The Teamsters Canada Rail Conference represents some 4500 locomotive engineers and conductors at CP. The previous collective agreement between the parties expired on December 31, 2006. On June 29, 2007, a conciliation officer was appointed.

On September 1, 2007, the parties reached a tentative settlement with the assistance of the conciliation officer. The settlement is subject to ratification by the union membership with results expected to be known by the end of October.

Through its Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, the Labour Program offers a number of services to assist employers and unions in resolving industrial relations disputes, and in improving their labour-management relations.
