Humane Society International to Document Gruesome Baby Grey Seal Slaughter on Hay Island, Nova Scotia


MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - Feb. 18, 2011) -

WHAT: Humane Society International/Canada will document Canada's 2011 commercial grey seal slaughter on Hay Island, a protected nature reserve. Broadcast quality video and still will be available for media download.
   
WHEN: The Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans officially opened the hunt on Feb. 16, 2011. The killing is expected to begin within days.
   
WHERE: Hay Island, Nova Scotia – part of the protected Scaterie Island Wilderness Area off Cape Breton.

Background: Canada's Department of Fisheries and Oceans and the Nova Scotia Government authorized the commercial slaughter of baby seals on Hay Island, part of the protected Scaterie Island Wilderness Area. The DFO will allow the slaughter of nearly 2,000 seals as of Feb. 16, 2011.
